the dailies: ryan berkley.

Ahhh, Ryan Berkley! I LOVE this guy— you’ll probably recognize his awesome animal-in-suits illustrations from his Etsy shop right here [adorable, yes?!]. He also happens to have a super fun blog titled ‘Let’s Share‘, a fun read about Ryan’s super-cute fam.

ANYWAY… Friday means the last of our Dailies series for the week, but you’re in luck— I’ll have more for you next week! You are SUCH lucky readers… ;)

HUGE thanks to Ryan for humoring me and letting us follow him on a super fun Saturday!:

9:15am
I wake up, get dressed and get the paper. There is dew outside on the lawn. Lots of it. I can’t remember the last time I sat and observed and appreciated some dew.
I check Etsy and we had a few sales overnight (it seems like those are often international). I take a shower and call friends to meet up for breakfast.

10:45am
My wife (Lucy) and I meet our friendly (and patient) friends Jason and Sarah for breakfast. Plans got mixed up and they sat at their house for close to an hour while we waited for them at the café. It appears I totally forgot last week I said we’d meet them at their house and carpool. I finally called them at their house (where they were waiting), and they met us there. I left them nice notes in their menus expressing my apologies. Sarah used to work for Dark Horse comics, and periodically she collects free comics for me. Here is my awesome stack. Thanks guys!

12:45pm
Get home from breakfast. There was a nice package for us from Composition Gallery in Colorado – it’s a letter pressed poster for an animal themed show I am participating in!  Awesome!
We also get a visit from neighbors extraordinaire: Seamus and Walter the dog. Walter will be staying with us in September and has already taken a liking to our house.

1:45pm
Time to leave for some extensive errands. I load the car with Etsy orders (for Post Office drop-off), and prints that I will be showing to a store for wholesale purposes.
It is a really nice and sunny day. Perfect for a drive.

2:10pm
After the Post Office, it’s a bit of a drive through crazytown (82nd Ave) to hiptown (Hawthorne Blvd.), where I will try to sell my wares. I’m pretty sure that’s Tobias Funke there on the right, out for a stroll.

2:23pm
I arrive at Greg’s (a nice little boutique shop with lots of neat stuff) on Hawthorne Blvd. They had emailed me a week or so ago and wanted to see my stuff in person. The two friendly ladies behind the counter (Miranda and Julia) were very, very enthusiastic over my prints and wanted to stock most of them on the spot. I told them they could sit and decide while I went to get a haircut. I’d be back.

2:48pm
I leave to get my haircut but first to take care of an errand I’ve been meaning to do for close to a year. I wanted to drop off two donated paintings (bottom left) to my favorite museum in town, the Velveteria. On the way there, I stop into a very cool vintage shop called “SMUT” to purchase some much-needed, unopened trading cards from the early nineties.  Lucy has been bugging me to get her some Yo MTV Raps trading cards and I’ll finally come through!
The Velveteria is in its new location, and it BLEW ME AWAY! If you are ever in Portland, please make it a priority to visit this amazing hot spot. I guarantee some laughs, tears, and some serious head scratching. Plus Carl and Caren (the proprietors) are one intriguing duo. Great job guys!

3:27pm
I head over to Bishops and get a really quick, yet effective haircut by a friendly chap named Seth. Of all things, us two men discussed the glories of marriage for 20 minutes. I thanked the fellow and was on my way to grab some food for the road.  I need to get back over to Greg’s, pick up the prints, and make it home before 5pm to make another Post Office run. It’s gonna be a tight squeeze…

3:50pm
I grab a vegan hot dog from The Dog House (a place I’ve always wanted to try) and head over to Greg’s to pick up the prints. I leave Greg’s at 4:45, REALLY hoping to make it home in time. The result of running numerous errands leaves my car a complete mess. The hot sun plus the sauerkraut from my uneaten dog makes the inside of my car smell like a loaded diaper. I make it home at 5pm on the dot, grab the last batch of orders, and JUST make the 5:15 deadline at the other Post Office down the street. Phew. Now I have a second to eat my hot dog on the way home. It was pretty good.

5:50pm
Time to relax at home for a bit, catch up with Lucy, and do a little housework. One of my jobs was to not just clear off the red table, but to actually put all of the stuff away where it belongs. I think I did a pretty good job.

7:11pm
I order some takeout from the super-delicious Bay Leaf restaurant. We get the usual order of golden tofu and sesame tofu. So delightful. All vegan. Really nice folks and great food. After dinner, I find a bit of time to start a new drawing for an upcoming solo show at Redux. Should be fun with lots of animals in crazy situations.

9:45pm
Lucy writes up the packages for Etsy orders from the day and I sign and package the prints.  It was a pretty good sales day.  I’m getting pretty tired.  We were out super late last night at a wedding and I’m feeling a bit drained. Sleep…creeping up…

11:05pm
One last hoorah before I call it a night. I bought Lucy and I some dessert while I was getting cash for my hot dog. I had the one on the left (double-fudge vegan awesomeness from Piece Of Cake. Time to brush, then it’s…

11:29pm
Upstairs, where it’s lights out for this sleepy vampire.  “What a great day that turned out to be for documentation for the clever ‘dailies’ feature”, I think to myself. “I felt like I got a lot done. And I’m so glad I finally found time- zzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ”.

  11. Your haircut will help you stay cool in the 5 million degree weather we are having in Portland. Is it strange I am ready for fall/winter?? Hmmm. If you are looking for a vegan friendly cafe, there is a shop called Sydney’s on 15th and Thurman. I have their link on my blog. They have AMAZING coffee and food. Anyway. I will have to check out your etsy shop. Portland Bloggers…blog on.

Ps. St.Cupcake’s vegan red velvet is HEAVEN!!

    Cheers!
